Adie’s Story
Adie has called Sikeston home for 62 years. For much of her life, she worked in the homes of others, doing housekeeping and childcare.
“I did in-home work—cleaning, babysitting—mostly for lawyers and doctors,” she said.

Her dedication spanned decades and made her part of the families she served. One family, in particular, kept her close for generations.
“I worked for a lawyer for over 50 years. I helped raise his eight kids, and then one of them became a lawyer, too; I raised his kids as well,” she said. “I traveled with them to places like Florida and even visited Tanya Tucker’s house in Nashville.”
In addition to the children she cared for through work, Adie raised three of her own and now enjoys time with her grandchildren.
As a senior, she receives a monthly food box through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which is distributed locally by Southeast Missouri Food Bank. The box provides shelf-stable, nutritious items like beans, canned vegetables, and grains.
“I couldn’t manage my meals like I do now without it,” she said. “I don’t have to buy things like beans and greens—it helps a lot.”
